What luck we had!

On our way to the Spiral Tunnel we saw trains on the track. When we got up there was a train that was just starting to go through the first opening. It was going west so it was going downhill. Bill got all excited so told me and Fran to go and watch while he parked. Wilma had never seen it and always thought “what is the point of this, there’s never anything to see” but this time she got to see the train and for my first time seeing it as well it was REALLY lucky.
Before they had the spiral tunnel, they had the Big Hill. It had a 4.5% incline, so going up the hill they had to add more engines, and going down they had to do on these other tracks to slow it down, and then keep continuing their journey. But there was this one conductor that told the switchman not to switch the tracks so he could slow down. It was really dangerous cause it can lead to a runaway train, but he made it to Fields okay, then got fired. The weather was nice and warm there too which was a bonus.

  1. Wow! You did get lucky. Isn't it neat to see? Did you watch the whole train go around?
